Here’s to the Crazy Ones

Day 4, Saturday: Favorite quote (from a person, from a book, etc) and why you love it

Quotes are one of my very favorite things, so asking me to choose a favorite is like asking me to choose a favorite child.  I haven’t shared this for awhile though – and I do so love it – so I thought it was worth sharing again.  Plus, it came from an Apple ad (and I pretty fiercely boycott all Apple products) so the irony tickles me.

Why do I love it?  No explanation necessary, as it completely speaks for itself.  I’m the proverbial round peg, doing my best to always celebrate my round-pegged children, in all their misfit glory.

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify and vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as crazy, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”

  1. I’m glad I came across your quote. I spent many years on the creative side
of the advertising. It was a fun, exciting career, and expanding the horizons
of your imagination was a necessary and ongoing pursuit. This led to the
creation of our store, The Creativity Institute, which focuses on child
creativity, and which brings me to the phrase “…permission to have crazy
    ideas.”

I borrowed it from an article in “Fast Company” about a company that built a culture of creativity. It talks about inspired employees and customers, but what does “…permission to have crazy ideas” mean to us as parents, grandparents and educators?

Creativity is freedom. Freedom to think without repercussion. Freedom to push the imaginary envelope without ridicule. Freedom to find the crazy in all of us that frequently leads to brilliance. For those of us fortunate enough to be in positions to inspire kids of all ages, please motivate, encourage…and most of all, give permission to have crazy ideas.
